Summary:
In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study involving 184 mildly iodine-deficient children, aged 10-13 years old, results indicate that iodine supplementation may improve cognition. The children were randomized to receive a daily tablet containing either 150 microg iodine or placebo for 28 weeks. Cognitive performance was evaluated at intervention end. Children in the iodine group showed significant improved scores in picture concepts and matrix reasoning, compared with children in the placebo group. Thus, the authors of this study conclude, “Iodine supplementation improved perceptual reasoning in mildly iodine-deficient children and suggests that mild iodine deficiency could prevent children from attaining their full intellectual potential.”

Dr. Moulden, we understand that you have made a revolutionary discovery. Can you tell us about it?

I would be happy to.

Through my extensive research and my work throughout the years, I have discovered that vaccinations are causing impaired blood flow (ischemia) to brain and body from clinically silent to death. These are strokes – across the board for all of us. I have reason to believe that all are being affected and all vaccinations ARE causing the overwhelming rise in autism, specific learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, sudden infant death, gulf war syndrome, dementia, seizure disorders, some cancers it would appear, and much much more.

What led you away from the rigid and possibly blinkered views of most of the rest of the medical profession?

The brain and nervous system is wired in a very specific format. Functions are localized to specific areas. Having studied brain and behavior, neurosciences, clinical neuropsychology, child neurodevelopment, functional brain imaging, clinical neurology, clinical neuropsychiatry, clinical medicine, immunology, hematology, tests and measurement, and understanding the tools and assumptions and techniques of mainstream medicine, I fell in the unique position of having being able to see clinical medicine problems, from a multitude of simultaneous areas of expertise and scientific knowledge. Relative to the human brain, I understood “rules and laws” of brain function relative to brain damage and the mechanisms of medical physiology that can uniquely cause unique patterns of brain damage in ways that my clinical skills could detect, that mainstream neuroimaging cannot. The initial “aha” moment was in 2001.

What was it which caught your attention, what tipped you off and incited you to scratch the surface and investigate further?

I was seeing, autistic patients, coming out of medical school – they had a trans-cortical motor aphasia, isolation of speech syndrome, and very specific cranial nerve palsies that could ONLY be accounted for by ischemic stroke. Remarkably, my studies of schizophrenia, dementia, and research exposure to neuroimaging modalities and brain and behavioral assessments before medical school contributed to my ability to “see” what has been in front of our eyes all along – ischemic strokes and brain damages – from vaccinations. The problem has been we neither knew how to measure, when to measure or what to measure, let alone what the limitations were, of the tools we have been using to measure brain integrity, in health, disease and disorder.

It has taken the past several years to decipher how ischemic brain damages were happening in the autism we were seeing and the many other neurodevelopmental disorders. I now believe I have the answers for this, or so it appears and some solutions.

Wild polio caused the exact same brain damages as ALL other vaccines are. Indeed, Guillian Barre syndrome and a host of other neurological disorders is being caused by a common mechanism of injury – albeit from different triggers for different individuals. This is ischemia –from impaired blood flow in microcirculation units. We simply did not appreciate what was right before our eyes.

My first cases included several Autistic and Schizophrenic patients. They were showing the exact same acute onset palsies – paralysis. These brain damages were subtle – but measurable multiple, and were present in the pre-vaccine era for wild viruses like polio and infantile paralysis.

Once I was armed with the knowledge and skills of a medical doctor, a clinical neuropsychologist, a child neurodevelopmentalist, with research experience in neuroimaging, tests and measurement, scientific method design and analysis, functional localization of brain and behavioral disorders, and a broad base across several other scientific disciplines, I was able to see “the whole forest” despite the trees. Quite literally, I believe I have found and discovered a common mechanism towards acquired human disease and disorder – all of it. It is truly humbling.

How have you been able to show this and how have you managed to demonstrate this? What medical imaging underlies it all? What medical imaging is the basis for it all?

I have quantified and expanded standard neurological and clinical neuropsychological tools of brain function and assessment. In essence, I have “digitized” the neurological and neuropsychological physical neurological exams across neurodevelopment using contemporary image enhancement software constrained to functional localization in the brain relative to end vascular, watershed territories – “the end of the road” for varied brain blood vessel areas. All of my tools and techniques are non-invasive.

I am now able to assess in the here and now, or looking back 50 years ago, to answer questions as to cause, in disease, neurodevelopment disorders, and much more. Remarkably, we can now advance diagnose sudden infant death syndrome, and I can answer questions relative to – Was this a shaken baby?, Did vaccines cause this person to have autism? Was this death caused by Gardasil? Did vaccines cause these damages? Since the mechanism to damages is common across all, when vaccines are involved – and sometimes even virulent infectious diseases.

What is the basic information underlying your claims and what is the foundation of your beliefs?

Germs simply are not the only root cause of death, disease, and disorder. I have now conclusively shown that ALL vaccines, from infancy to geriatric, are causing the exact same brain damages irrespective of what disease or disorder comes out. The damages are specific to end vascular “mini strokes” that are beneath the resolution of our neuroimaging, but measurable in a before/after vaccination protocol. They are also directly measurable in real time – however, this involves techniques and technology I have not disclosed to the public as yet.

Remarkably, wild polio, pre-natal German measles, measles, tetanus, “Spanish flu”, etc.. all caused the exact same damages in the pre-vaccine era. We simply did not appreciate that a generic response in the human body was causing the paralysis and respiratory failure and more in from a non-specific immune response and instability of microscopic blood flow hemodynamics.

We have weakened viruses and bacteria, injected them into all of us and caused chronic illness and disease in an attenuated form, this is how these pathogens have always caused harm. It is the bodies response to foreign things entering it, especially under hypersensitivity states, that is causing neurodevelopment disorders and chronic illness and much more.

Bromides are a common endocrine disruptor. Because bromide is also a halide, it competes for the same receptors that are used in the thyroid gland (among other places) to capture iodine. This will inhibit thyroid hormone production resulting in a low thyroid state.

Iodine is essential for your body, and is detected in every organ and tissue. There is increasing evidence that low iodine is related to numerous diseases, including cancer.  Various clinicians and researchers have found iodine effective with everything from goiter to constipation.

Bromide can be found in several forms. Methyl Bromide is a pesticide used mainly on strawberries, found predominantly in the California areas. Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO) is added to citrus drinks to help suspend the flavoring in the liquid.

Potassium Bromate is a dough conditioner found in commercial bakery products and some flours.

If you are like most people, you probably haven’t spent much time thinking about how much bromine you’re absorbing from your car upholstery or your Mountain Dew. But bromine toxicity is a definite danger from some surprising sources, and it can wreak havoc on your health.

Bromines All Around You

Bromines are common endocrine disruptors, and are part of the halide family, a group of elements that includes fluorine, chlorine and iodine. What makes it so dangerous is that it competes for the same receptors that are used to capture iodine.

If you are exposed to a lot of bromine, your body will not hold on to the iodine that it needs. And iodine affects every tissue in your body — not just your thyroid.

You are already exposed to far too much chlorine and bromine. Bromine can be found in a number of places in your everyday world, including:

  • Pesticides (specifically methyl bromide, used mainly on strawberries, predominantly in California)
  • Plastics, like those used to make computers
  • Bakery goods and some flours often contain a “dough conditioner” called potassium bromate
  • Soft drinks (including Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Sun Drop, Squirt, Fresca and other citrus-flavored sodas), in the form of brominated vegetable oils (BVOs)
  • Medications such as Atrovent Inhaler, Atrovent Nasal Spray, Pro-Banthine (for ulcers), and anesthesia agents
  • Fire retardants (common one is polybromo diphenyl ethers or PBDEs) used in fabrics, carpets, upholstery, and mattresses
  • Bromine-based hot tub and swimming pool treatments

According to van Leeuwen, who has extensively studied the effects of sodium bromide on thyroid function:

“Although the bromide ion is widely distributed in nature, the main route of exposure in humans stems from bromide residues in food commodities as a result of the abundant use of bromide-containing pesticides, like methylbromide and ethylene dibromide, for soil fumigation in intensive horticulture and for postharvest treatment.”

One clinical consequence of overexposure to bromine is suppression of your thyroid, leading to hypothyroidism, which will be discussed shortly. Another is bromide toxicity.

Bromine — The Bully of the Halide Group

When you ingest or absorb bromine, it displaces iodine, and this iodine deficiency leads to an increased risk for cancer of the breast, thyroid gland, ovary and prostate — cancers that we see at alarmingly high rates today. This phenomenon is significant enough to have been given its own name — the Bromide Dominance Theory.

Aside from its effects on your endocrine glands, bromine is toxic in and of itself. Bromide builds up in your central nervous system and results in many problems. It is a central nervous system depressant and can trigger a number of psychological symptoms such as acute paranoia and other psychotic symptoms.

In fact, in an audio interview, physician Jorge Flechas reported that, between 1920 and 1960, at least 20 percent of all hospital admissions for “acute paranoid schizophrenia” were a result of ingesting bromine-containing products.

In addition to psychiatric problems, bromine toxicity can manifest as the following:

  • Skin rashes and severe acne
  • Loss of appetite and abdominal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Metallic taste
  • Cardiac arrhythmias

Baby Boomers might recall a popular product from the 1950s called Bromo-Seltzer. These effervescent granules, developed by the Emerson Drug Company of Baltimore, were used to treat heartburn, upset stomach, indigestion, headaches and hangovers.

Bromo-Selzer’s original formula contained 3.2 mEq/teaspoon of sodium bromide — hence the name. The sedative effect probably explained its popularity as a hangover remedy. Bromides were withdrawn from the American market in 1975 due to their toxicity.

Bromo-Selzer is still on the market, but no longer contains bromide.

Bromines in Your Bread Box: Potassium Bromate

The ban on bromines have not prevented them from sneaking into your foods and personal care products.

You probably are not aware of this, but nearly every time you eat bread in a restaurant or consume a hamburger or hotdog bun you are consuming bromide, as it is commonly used in flours.

The use of potassium bromate as an additive to commercial breads and baked goods has been a huge contributor to bromide overload in Western cultures.

Bromated flour is “enriched” with potassium bromate. Commercial baking companies claim it makes the dough more elastic and better able to stand up to bread hooks. However, Pepperidge Farm and other successful companies manage to use only unbromated flour without any of these so-called “structural problems.”

Potassium bromate is also found in some toothpastes and mouthwashes, where it’s added as an antiseptic and astringent. It has been found to cause bleeding and inflammation of gums in people using these products.

Sodium Bromate and BMOs

Mountain Dew, one of the worst beverages you can drink, uses brominated vegetable oil as an emulsifier. Not only that, it contains high fructose corn syrup, sodium benzoate, more than 55 mg of caffeine per 12 ounce can, and Yellow Dye #5 (tartrazine, which has been banned in Norway, Austria and Germany.)

Even drinking water can be a source of bromide. When drinking water containing bromide is exposed to ozone, bromate ions are formed, which are powerful oxidizing agents. Such was the case in 2004 when Coca Cola Company had to recall Dasani bottled water.

Sodium bromate can also be found in personal care products such as permanent waves, hair dyes, and textile dyes. Benzalkonium is used as a preservative in some cosmetics.

Finally, bromine and chlorine were the most common toxic elements reportedly found in automobiles, according to the blog of David Brownstein, MD (March 2007). They showed up in the seats, armrests, door trim, shift knobs and other areas of the car.

Think about how much time you spend enclosed in your outgassing Chevy… windows up with no air circulation.

The United States is quite behind in putting an end to the egregious practice of allowing bromine chemicals in your foods. In 1990, the United Kingdom banned bromate in bread. In 1994, Canada did the same. Brazil recently outlawed bromide in flour products.

What’s taking us so long? Another case of our government protecting big industry — instead of protecting you.

Iodine Levels and Cancer Risk

Iodine levels have significantly dropped due to bromine exposure; declining consumption of iodized salt, eggs, fish, and sea vegetables; and soil depletion. In the U.S. population, there was a 50 percent reduction in urinary iodine excretion between 1970 and 1990.

What’s this doing to our country’s health?

The Japanese consume 89 times more iodine than Americans due to their daily consumption of sea vegetables, and they have reduced rates of many chronic diseases, including the lowest rates of cancer in the world. The RDA for iodine in the U.S. is a meager 150 mcg/day, which pales in comparison with the average daily intake of 13800 mcg/day for the Japanese.

There is a large body of evidence suggesting that low cancer rates in Japan are a result of their substantially higher iodine levels. Iodine has documented antioxidant and anti-proliferative properties.

A strong case can be made that your iodine RDA should be closer to what the Japanese consume daily, if breast cancer rates are any indication. Low iodine can lead to fibrocystic breast disease in women (density, lumps and bumps), hyperplasia, and atypical mammary tissue. Such fibrocystic changes in breast tissue have been shown to reverse in the presence of iodine supplementation after 3-4 months.

If you are interested in being tested for iodine deficiency, the urine iodine challenge test is the best way to assess your iodine level.

Bromine and Your Thyroid

Adding to the negative health effects of bromine, the damage to your thyroid health deserves special mention.

As stated in the first part of this article, bromine exposure depletes your body’s iodine by competing with iodine receptors. Iodine is crucial for thyroid function. Without iodine, your thyroid gland would be completely unable to produce thyroid hormone.

Even the names of the different forms of thyroid hormone reflect the number of iodine molecules attached — T4 has four attached iodine molecules, and T3 (the biologically active form of the hormone) has three–showing what an important part iodine plays in thyroid biochemistry.

Hypothyroidism is far more prevalent than once thought in the U.S. The latest estimates are that 13 million Americans have hypothyroidism, but the actual numbers are probably higher. Some experts claim that 10 to40 percent of Americans have suboptimal thyroid function.

Many of these folks may actually have nothing wrong with their thyroid gland at all — they may just be suffering from iodine deficiency.

Seven Tips for Avoiding Bromine and Optimizing Iodine

Trying to avoid bromine is like trying to avoid air pollution — all you can do is minimize your exposure. That said, here are a few things you can do to minimize your risk:

  1. Eat organic as often as possible. Wash all produce thoroughly. This will minimize your pesticide exposure.
  2. Avoid eating or drinking from (or storing food and water in) plastic containers. Use glass and safe ceramic vessels.
  3. Look for organic whole-grain breads and flour. Grind you own grain, if possible. Look for the “no bromine” or “bromine-free” label on commercial baked goods.
  4. Avoid sodas. Drink natural, filtered water instead.
  5. If you own a hot tub, look into an ozone purification system. Such systems make it possible to keep the water clean with minimal chemical treatments.
  6. Look for personal care products that are as chemical-free as possible. Remember — anything going on you, goes in you.
  7. When in a car or a building, open windows as often as possible, preferably on opposing sides of the space for cross ventilation. Utilize fans to circulate the air. Chemical pollutants are much higher inside buildings (and cars) than outside.

Avoid Unfermented Soy

Another major contributor to thyroid dysfunction that I did not discuss above is unfermented soy. Soy isoflavones can wreak havoc on your thyroid.

Kaayla Daniel’s groundbreaking book, The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food is a powerful exposé that reveals the truth about the soy myths that have infiltrated our culture.

It’s ironic that soy has become so accepted as a health food when, as Dr. Daniel states, thousands of studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid- and hormonal dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility–even cancer and heart disease.

So if you want to keep your thyroid healthy, you’ll definitely want to avoid unfermented soy products of all kinds, including soy milk.

  • Ritalin, the controversial drug used to calm down hyperactive children, should not be routinely prescribed by doctors and never given to the under-fives, experts say today. They also advise that it should be given to older children only if other help has not worked.

    The use of Ritalin and similar drugs is extensive and, some argue, employed indiscriminately for children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The guidance says it should not be used at all in children under five and used for older children only when they have severe ADHD or as a last resort.

    Guidance issued by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommends instead training for parents as a first step towards helping children.

    About 55,000 children in the UK are thought to have been prescribed drugs for ADHD. The numbers have been soaring; prescriptions almost doubled between 1998 and 2004.

    Some parents and teachers say the drugs have transformed children unable to learn and causing huge difficulties for themselves and others. But there have been widespread concerns that the drugs are over-used. They also have side-effects, including stunting growth.

    The Nice guidelines say that drugs, where they are given, must be used alongside psychological therapy and support. They rule out, however, omega 3 fish oils and say that while children need a good nutritious diet, adding special foods or avoiding others makes no difference.

    The new guidelines for the first time attempt to get help for children in both the classroom and at home. They advise that teachers should get training for supporting children with ADHD, a condition thought to affect up to 3% of the school-age population.

    Christine Merrell, an education specialist and guideline group member, said affected children could be disorganised and forgetful, and find it hard to make friends because of their apparent lack of consideration. “They won’t have pencils, pens, exercise books or their PE kit. You lend them a pencil and it comes back broken. They disrupt other children, have quite short attention spans, push into queues and butt into conversations. The child with ADHD will blurt out the answer before anybody else has had a chance.”

    Nicola Salt, a GP and another group member, confirmed such children were “always on the go, driven by a motor, fidgety”, and like that “all the time and in all circumstances”.

    Parents will be offered education and training programmes lasting eight to 12 weeks to enable them to help children, some of whom will have been hyperactive since learning to walk.

    Tim Kendall, joint director of the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health, said training would enable parents to understand what was ADHD and what was not, and what could “focus the child and manage the child’s behaviour without getting locked into big battles”.

    If consistent help from parents and teachers did not work or the ADHD was severe, children could be given methylphenidate (Ritalin), the guideline says. But they still had to be continuously monitored and assessed.

    Kendall said the numbers given drug treatment probably would not alter much. If 30 in 1,000 had ADHD, about a third of those would already be getting drugs. The guidance would mean drugs going to more children who really needed them.

    The guidance, however, is controversial. Sami Timimi, child psychiatry professor at Lincoln University, said there was no evidence that stimulant drugs worked in the long-term for those with severe ADHD. The guideline group had classified ADHD as a neurological disorder, a problem in the development of the brain – which meant the condition would continue to be treated by paediatricians, who were prone to prescribing drugs, rather than by psychiatrists who might tackle it as a behavioural disorder

    Nuke Your Microwave Oven!

    Toss the microwave ovens – the sooner the better!  I would imagine that most of us have seen warnings about using microwave ovens for some time. The first ones I recall were way back in the radical seventies, when I learned that our standards for allowable microwaves were 100’s of times less stringent than the world leading authorities in microwaves – the Soviet Union (the same folks that constantly bombarded our embassy in Moscow with microwaves).  I also read reports that the incidence of cataracts among microwave users was alarmingly high – especially those that stood close to the microwave while it was in operation.  And what made the cataracts really stand out was that they were “anterior cataracts” which formed further within the eye than normal cataracts which formed near the lens surface.  Hard to miss the connection with microwave ovens, which cook food from the inside out.

    I recall seeing a Dr. Edward Fujimoto (manager of the Wellness Program) at the Castle hospital on a TV program where he explained this health hazard. He was talking about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers.

    This applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastics re leases dioxins into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Dioxins are carcinogens and highly toxic to the cells of our bodies. Instead, he recommends using glass, Corning Ware, or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, without the dioxins.

    So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn’t bad but you don’t know what is in the paper. It’s just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He said we might remember when some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

    To add to this, Saran wrap placed over foods as they are nuked, with the high heat, actually drips poisonous toxins into the food, use paper towels.

    I had heard those warnings before, at least the ones about dioxins from the plastic.  For proof that microwaves do something to plastic, just cook a dinner a bit longer than recommended and see where the plastic melts and turns to some kind of slag, and also mixes in with your food!  Of look at some of your old Tupperware so-called microwavable dishes that have been used a long time and look at the mottled and dimpled surfaces where repeated zapping has altered the plastic.  What I had not seen before though was the warning about freezing water bottles.

    After getting this latest warning, I decided to not just put my blinders on and continue making carcinogens.  I thought, OK, I will just use corning ward or tempered glass.  Just to make sure, I did some checking on microwaves.  What I found was startling!

    To put it quite simply, whereas traditional cooking heats food with temperature and cooks food from the outside in, micro waved food is cooked from the inside out by bombarding the food with microwaves. Furthermore, microwaving alters food and creates chemical compounds that the human body has not evolved or adapted to handle.

    I found that scientific clinical studies had been conducted by the Russians (THE microwave authorities) the Swiss and the Germans.  In some instances these studies have been suppressed by industry, particularly where industry had charges brought against a researcher in Switzerland, and, after initially having the researcher convicted, fined and given a gag order, industry lost on appeal and had to pay the researcher for damages.

    Here are the consensus conclusions of the studies conducted in the three countries:

    1). Continually eating food processed from a microwave oven causes long term – permanent – brain damage by “shorting out” electrical impulses in the brain [de-polarizing or de-magnetizing the brain tissue].

    2). The human body cannot metabolize [break down] the unknown by-products created in micro waved food.

    3). Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by continually eating micro waved foods.

    4). The effects of micro waved food by-products are residual [long term, permanent] within the human body.

    5). Minerals, vitamins, and nutrients of all micro waved food is reduced or altered so that the human body gets little or no benefit, or the human body absorbs altered compounds that cannot be broken down.

    6). The minerals in vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals when cooked in microwave ovens.

    7). Micro waved foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths [tumors]. This may explain the rapidly increased rate of colon cancer in America.

    8). The prolonged eating of micro waved foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human blood.

    9). Continual ingestion of micro waved food causes immune system deficiencies through lymph gland and blood serum alterations.

    10). Eating micro waved food causes loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability, and a decrease of intelligence.”

    Perhaps instead of thinking of the minutes we save from the microwaves, we should think of the years and the nutrition we may be losing!  My suggestion: if you want to save time, try a good convection oven.  Whatever you cook with, do not overcook.  It costs nutrients and causes carcinogens, even in foods besides meats.

    Few things leave more long-lasting imprints on carpet as grape juice. Try as they might, cleaning solvents seem impenetrable to Nature’s purple potion. Once this destructive process has developed there is no return of visual restoration. We are beginning to see and observe another toxic reaction which affects the central nervous system which is related to PHENYLALANINE LEVELS IN THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM.     The ABC article stresses that risk factors include diabetes and heart disease. Aspartame no doubt has caused an epidemic of diabetes because it can precipitate it as discussed in Dr. Roberts medical text. It also aggravates and simulates diabetic retinopathy and neuropathy. And who do the manufacturers and the professional organizations like the American Diabetes Assn funded by the manufacturers push aspartame on but diabetics.     The entire family can be destroyed by aspartame. It is an endocrine disrupting drug which stimulates prolactin. It changes the menses and triggers infertility.     Dr. Roberts realized aspartame was a poison when it was approved because his diabetic patients began going blind, being confused and their blood sugar could not be controlled. Instead the young girl gave the packet to the ADA.

    Dr. Roberts practiced medicine for 50 years graduating medical school when he was about 21. He’s a brilliant physician who was selected at the Best Doctor in the US in the l980’s. His first text on medical diagnosis was used by 60,000 doctors, especially to prepared for their Board examinations. You only have to take your Boards once and its a compliment to a physician if he does it again years ago to show he is current with medicine. Dr. Roberts is Board Certified and Recertified in Internal Medicine. The ADA saw that on his stationery and actually told the young girl I was trying to get off aspartame that it meant he had lost his license. That’s how far these professional organizations will go to keep being funded by industry. They simply sacrifice the consumer.

    The aspartame obesity issue has now been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Sharon Fowler’s study (University of Texas) just recently released has proven diet drinks link to obesity using 8 years of data.     On Fox News Sunday, Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld, reported the Italian study on aspartame while Michael Jacobson of CSPI actually said there should be warnings on soda pop, one to drink diet soda. They ought to call it NSANPI, No Science And No Public Interest.     While it may be difficult initially to wean the family from foods containing these compounds, it can be done. (We are getting used to stevia, which contains vitamins and minerals!     Excitotoxins, Neurodegeneration and Neurodevelopment by Russell L. Blaylock, M.D. There are a growing number of clinicians and basic scientists who are convinced that a group of compounds called excitotoxins play a critical role in the development of several neurological disorders including migraines, seizures, infections, abnormal neural development, certain endocrine disorders, neuropsychiatric disorders, learning disorders in children, AIDS dementia, episodic violence, lyme borreliosis, hepatic encephalopathy, specific types of obesity, and especially the neurodegenerative diseases, such as ALS, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and olivopontocerebellar degeneration.

    2 Yet, the FDA still refuses to recognize the immediate and long term danger to the public caused by the practice of allowing various excitotoxins to be added to the food supply, such as MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, and aspartame. The amount of these neurotoxins added to our food has increased enormously since their first introduction. For example, since 1948 the amount of MSG added to foods has doubled every decade. By 1972 262,000 metric tons were being added to foods. Over 800 million pounds of aspartame have been consumed in various products since it was first approved.

    Ironically, these food additives have nothing to do with preserving food or protecting its integrity. They are all used to alter the taste of food. MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, and natural flavoring are used to enhance the taste of food so that it tastes better. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener.

    These toxins (excitotoxins) are not present in just a few foods, but rather in almost all processed foods. In many cases they are being added in disguised forms, such as natural flavoring, spices, yeast extract, textured protein, soy protein extract, etc. Experimentally, we know that when subtoxic levels of excitotoxins are given to animals in divided doses, they experience full toxicity, i.e.they are synergistic. Also, liquid forms of excitotoxins, as occurs in soups, gravies and diet soft drinks are more toxic than that added to solid foods. This is because they are more rapidly absorbed and reach higher blood levels.

    So, what is an excitotoxin? These are substances, usually acidic amino acids, that react with specialized receptors in the brain in such a way as to lead to destruction of certain types of neurons. Glutamate is one of the more commonly known excitotoxins. MSG is the sodium salt of glutamate. This amino acid is a normal neurotransmitter in the brain. In fact, it is the most commonly used neurotransmitter by the brain.

    Defenders of MSG and aspartame use, usually say: How could a substance that is used normally by the brain cause harm? This is because, glutamate, as a neurotransmitter, exists in the extracellular fluid only in very, very small concentrations – no more than 8 to 12uM. When the concentration of this transmitter rises above this level the neurons begin to fire abnormally. At higher concentrations, the cells undergo a specialized process of delayed cell death known as excitotoxicity, that is, they are excited to death.

    It should also be appreciated that the effects of excitotoxin food additives generally are not dramatic. Some individuals may be especially sensitive and develop severe symptoms and even sudden death from cardiac irritability, but in most instances the effects are subtle and develop over a long period of time. While the food additives, MSG and aspartame, are probably not direct causes of the neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, they may well precipitate these disorders and certainly worsen their pathology as we shall see.

    It may be that many people with a propensity for developing one of these diseases would never develop a full blown disorder had it not been for their exposure to high levels of food borne excitotoxin additives. Some may have had a very mild form of the disease had it not been for the exposure. Likewise, food borne excitotoxins may be harmful to those suffering from strokes, head injury and HIV infection and certainly should not be used in a hospital setting.
